The promise of spring

warmfebday1

Dear Izzy, Max, and Kate,

New ball gloves and under-hand tosses -

the turning cheek of uncertainty grew more sure with each toss.

I looked up at the sky, closed my eyes

let the warmth surround me.

The long winter; When I felt sick but full of hope.

Willing to let my strength pass.

Willing, I think, to let it go even if it never came back. Accepting change if more was required.

But the first warmth when winter begins to lose it’s grip is the returning promise.

The sun on my face, I watched you run and play, free from the cold.

We went for a scooter ride. Bought those gloves for tee ball and took soft tosses and grounders.

Had sword fights with fallen tree branches. Danced on the sidewalk.

Rode big wheels. Climbed trees.

Began to trust in the promise of spring again. Lived in the warmth of the day and the moment of your childhood.

I love you,

- Daddy
