Dear Izzy, Max, and Kate,

One of the best days of the year for us in each of the last three years has been your race at Team Magic’s Brentwood Kids Tri, Izzy.

It’s a family day for us. Both sets of your grandparents come to cheer you on along with your brother and sister.

Just like in years past, Therese, Faye, and Team Magic did a great job organizing an event that has plenty of room for chaos. Mix hundreds of excited kids, nervous parents, and 3 sports and things can get a little wild. But as with all Team Magic races, the Brentwood Kids Tri always goes off without a hitch.

It’s a great way for kids to get involved in a healthy sport at a young age. The distances are kept short, so that the focus is on fun and not on “endurance”.

Izzy, your race was a 100 meter pool swim, a 4k bike ride, and a 1k run.

We arrived at 8am for your 8:45 start, Izzy. I had checked your bike in the evening before the race, so all you needed to do was get body marked and set up your transition area. Team Magic provides plenty of patient and encouraging volunteers to help each kid set up their transition area.

Here’s a recap of your 3rd triathlon in pictures:

you were less nervous this year prerace. You're turning into a real pro!

You make us proud everyday, Izzy. Not just when you race. You’re a very special kid, in everyway: your athletic determination, your commitment to being a great student, your belief that you should always do the right thing, your Faith, and most of all your huge heart. Everyone who meets you knows and whispers to Mommy and I that “there’s something special about her.” Of course, I’ve known it since the day I first saw your face. You will change the world someday, Iz. You already have.

I’m so happy you love triathlon. I haven’t asked you to like it. But you’ve grown up around it. I wrote this to you last year and I can’t find a better way to say it this year:

You’ll learn so much about yourself through triathlon. About others. And about how you’re connected through love, determination, and courage to the small group of people who dare to test their boundaries. And find peace in that pursuit.

I love you,

- Daddy
